To maintain healthy trees and shrubs, supplement rainfall during heat stress or drought conditions. In Memphis and the Mid-South, watering should generally begin in early June and end in mid-to-late September as necessary. These are the hottest and usually the driest months for this area.
Rule of Thumb: Give your trees and shrubs the equivalent of one inch (1”) of rainfall every seven to ten days. The best way to measure for one inch is to set an empty tuna can near the tree or shrub and turn off the sprinkler with it is full.
HINT: Always make sure the ground is dry before next watering to avoid over-watering your trees and shrubs.
