Tree Assessment____________

Did you know that 70-90% of all plant and tree problems are due to environmental factors, site issues and malpractice? Have an Arborist assess your trees regularly, if possible yearly, to help detect and prevent health and structural problems. One of our trained professionals will inspect your trees and plants paying particular attention to problems such as root rot, structural cracks, lean/shift in the center of gravity, insects and disease. After a careful evaluation, the Arborist will make recommendations to you on how to better safeguard the health of your trees and plants. These recommendations may include pruning, cabling, bracing, lightning protections, removal, insect/disease treatment and prevention; and a feeding schedule.

Cabling & Bracing__________

Cabling and Bracing are two separate but intertwined services. They can be used independently of one another but are more often used in tandem to reinforce weak tree structures. Weaknesses in your trees can be caused by a variety of different factors that your Arborist can more fully explain to you during your Tree Assessment. Cabling configurations differ but each includes a 1/2 inch aircraft cable and heavy duty galvanized bolts. Bracing uses rods that are generally 1 to 2 times the diameter of the tree branch to be braced.

Large Tree Removal________

There are a variety of reasons why you may need to remove a large tree or trees from your property. Some large trees are in the way of construction projects, some have been damaged by storms, disease or insects and present a hazard and some need to be thinned to make room for other trees to grow. Large tree removal can be accomplished by a crane, Jones Bros. has two, or manually. Your arborist will consult with you in both emergency situations and/or during your scheduled annual inspection to let you know if and when you should consider removing a large tree.

Pruning_________________

Reasons for pruning may include, but are not limited to, improving tree health, structure and form, improving aesthetics, reducing risks or satisfying a specific need. Structural pruning to properly train young trees less than twenty-five (25) years old will help them develop into structurally strong trees well suited to the site and their intended functions. Pruning mature trees should focus on maintaining health, appearance, structure, and form. For those not pruned and properly trained as young trees, it should also address Hazard Pruning and possible Crown Reduction or Crown Restoration to repair storm damage or correct Crown Dieback. See Pruning Standards and Specifications for more information.

Lightning Protection_______

A common misunderstanding about lightning protection systems is that they either attract or repel lightning; they don’t do either. Lightning Protection Systems are designed to shield the tree itself by providing a safe, low resistance path for a current to reach the ground. Once it reaches the ground the energy from the lightning dissipates deep in the ground. With a properly installed Lightning Protection System in place the tree is never actually struck by lightning. These systems are typically 99% effective in preventing damage or injury to your trees.

Stump Removal/Grinding___

After a tree is removed, you are often left with an unsightly stump. Stumps can be removed through a process of grinding. There are two different standards used depending on whether you intend to replant in the area. The main differences are the depth of the grind and whether or not the resulting hole is backfilled with topsoil. Consult with your tree care professional to determine which method is appropriate for your stump; be sure to let him/her know if you plan to re-plant in the place where your tree used to stand. Like all tree services, it is best to let your arborist know up front what you expect!

Eco-Fact

A few basic tree Do’s and Don’ts

  1. Do make sure your tree specialist understands tree biology & structure before he/she starts a chainsaw
  2. Don’t allow climbing spikes to be used on your trees
  3. Don’t allow your trees to be “topped”
  4. Don’t use pruning paints or sealants on your trees
  5. Do consult with an Arborist at least yearly about the health of your trees—considered it a “check-up” for your trees.
